Qatar: A Strong Mediator and its Strategic Role in the Middle East

The SAIS Foreign Policy Institute hosted Dr. Majed Al-Ansari, Spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Advisor to the Prime Minister, to talk about Qatar’s role in facilitating dialogue in the Middle East. FPI Senior Fellow Hafed Al-Ghwell moderated the conversation on Qatar's strategic maneuvers amidst regional discord, its balancing act between diverse alliances, and its pivotal role as a bridge between Washington and the region.

Dr. Al-Ansari discussed how Qatar chose to become a mediator as a matter of national security since the 1990’s, even if it requires engagement with groups such as Hamas. He underscored how sincerity is a critical factor in how Qatar positions itself as a trustworthy mediator, as well as its long-term commitment to supporting peace-building measures beyond peace talks.

Dr. Al-Ansari further outlined Qatar’s actions address the situation in the Gaza Strip.
